Three things cannot be long hidden: the Sun, the Moon and the Truth.
- Proverb variously attributed and wordedIn the midst of the coldest winter in New York in 20 years it seems that no amount of freezing sunshine, Vitamin D or dry radiator heat can overcome the chill of the wind off the Hudson, East or Harlem Rivers. Rick Wester Fine Art is pleased to present a visual antidote to Seasonal Affective Disorder with NOT LONG HIDDEN, a group exhibition that combines the work of five photographers who have explored and incorporated into their work a highly visceral and sensual vision of summer light, color and tone. Kate Joyce (Chicago, IL), Jakub Karwowski (Krakow), Joe Maloney (Hancock, NY), Cheryle St. Onge (Durham, NH) and Joni Sternbach (Brooklyn, NY) all share unique sensibilities towards how radiant light shapes their imagery. Like music that transforms auditory sensation into emotion and action, the photographers of NOT LONG HIDDEN create the sensory equivalent of stopping, mid-step on a summer’s day, to take in the color and absorb its warmth. Each pursues distinctly different subject matter and approaches, however all dwell within the realm of the documentary photograph with remarkably individual results. |

| Kate Joyce, a visual artist from Santa Fe now based in Chicago, is a member of the documentary project Bull City Summer, which brought together a dozen acclaimed artists to document the 2013 season at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park, the home of the legendary minor league baseball team, the Durham Bulls. Organized by the writer Sam Stephenson, Bull City Summer will be featured in exhibitions at the North Carolina Museum of Art this coming February and at the Contemporary Art Museum in Raleigh in May. A catalogue, to be published by Daylight Books, will be released in conjunction with the shows. Joyce, without any prior experience with baseball or professional sports, eschews the directly heroic but finds beauty, nobility, humor and formal complexity in the stadium’s environment and the players’ actions. She frames the rituals and symbols of baseball as if freshly uncovered evidence of a previously unknown tribe. |

| Jakub Karwowski photographs his wife and son with all the care one would expect from a talented, loving husband and father assembling a family album of memories. What he accomplishes is an essay of perfect settings and languid moments, fully conscious of the construction he has created. To assemble such an album is, as he has said, “to live in this fiction, tangling it up with the form of a family album, framing it and hanging [it] on a hook.” After studying Art History and Musicology, Karwowski attended the Institute of Creative Photography, Silesian University in Opava, Czech Republic and received his Masters at the National Film School in Łódź, Poland in 2011. He lives in Krakow with his wife and two children. This is the first time his work will be exhibited in the United States. |

| In the 1970s and 1980s Joe Maloney was a member of the stable of legendary photographers at LIGHT, the New York contemporary photography gallery that represented many notable photographers such as Harry Callahan, Aaron Siskind and Garry Winogrand. They also showed Stephen Shore and Mitch Epstein who, with Joe Maloney, were at the beginning of the color revolution in photography. Their work ignited the acceptance of the medium, helping set the stage for today’s photographers whose use of color is automatic and not necessarily a conscious choice. Last summer, RWFA featured Maloney in a retrospective exhibition, Asbury Park and the Jersey Shore, c. 1979 The selected works for NOT LONG HIDDEN continue to display Maloney’s incisive view of America, concentrating on car culture. Maloney portrays the automobile as the ultimate American kinetic sculpture, awash in the radiant glint of the sun or leaving jet trails of red taillights at night as the Empire State Building proudly displays the red, white and blue of July 4th in the background. |

| Cheryle St. Onge’s photographs are succinct glimpses into the photographer’s nostalgia for youthful fascination in the natural environment. The evocation of juvenescent observation is perhaps due to St. Onge’s use of an 8 x 10 inch view camera, an instrument that forces its operator to, as she has stated, “take a long look at the wonder.” This is the first time that her work has been presented at RWFA, but her photographs have been widely exhibited. Her work is included in the collections of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston and the Portsmouth Athenaeum, Portsmouth, New Hampshire. St. Onge studied photography with Nicholas Nixon and Barbara Bosworth, receiving her M.F.A. from the Massachusetts College of Art in 1987. |

| A New York native, Joni Sternbach is well known for her 2009 monograph Surfland and her use of the wet-plate collodion process in her portraiture of surfers. As seen in her 2012 solo exhibition, Surfland, Revisited 2006-2011 at RWFA, Sternbach captured the relaxed intimacy of her subjects – timeless in their profound sun-kissed comradeship. The Surfland series has also been exhibited at Peabody Essex Museum, Salem, MA, and Blue Sky Gallery, Portland, OR, but this will be the first time Joni has exhibited archival pigment prints from the series in this scale, which have been printed by LTI Lightside Photographic Services. Sternbach received her BA from the School of Visual Arts, New York, NY and her MA from the International Center of Photography at New York University, New York, NY. |

ABOUT RWFA
Since 2008, RWFA has presented primarily photographic works, however with its move in April to quarters three times its previous size the gallery’s scope is also expanding. Concentrating on mid-career and emerging artists, the critically acclaimed exhibition program has brought greater attention to the gallery’s artists.
